Teatro Periplos Celebrates Tradition with «Carpinteros» at the 3rd Juglares Festival in Valdivia, Highlighting River Carpentry Heritage
Original article: Desde el río Cutipay, Valdivia, a la 3° Fiesta de Juglares: Teatro Periplos trae a escena la memoria viva de la carpintería de ribera The Valdivian company Teatro Periplos will participate in the 3rd Juglares Festival with the play «Carpinteros: The Villanueva Brothers by the Cutipay River,» a production that honors the memory of traditional crafts and the relationship between communities and their land. The performance is scheduled for Thursday, May 7, at 7 PM at Matucana 100, as part of the festival organized by Tryo Teatro Banda. «Carpinteros…» pays tribute to those who keep the craft of riverside carpentry alive in southern Chile.
Directed by Yevgeni Mayorga and written by Domingo Araya, the production blends storytelling, live music, and visual theater to elevate the practices and knowledge that belong to this national cultural heritage. In this context, the play incorporates distinctive elements of Teatro Periplos’s scenic language, such as masks, puppets, and object manipulation, crafting a narrative that unfolds in three parts, addressing themes like family origins in this trade, the transmission of knowledge, respect for nature, the master/apprentice relationship, and the tensions associated with machismo. Inspired by the true story of the Villanueva brothers and the tradition of riverside carpentry along the Cutipay River in Valdivia, the production traverses various temporalities to showcase how knowledge is passed between generations, revealing a deep connection among craftsmanship, nature, and family memory.
Domingo Araya, playwright and founder of Teatro Periplos, shares that «audiences will encounter very magical stories here. The relationship between a father and daughter will illuminate how this daughter shifts his worldview. They will also discover pieces of Valdivia’s history and the impact of the earthquake on this family’s life.
They will witness the wisdom honed in this profession, which seeks to be passed down to new generations. » Through the use of masks, large puppets, and paper theater, Teatro Periplos constructs a poetic universe where stories come together gradually, much like an artisanal boat. Additionally, as a scenic support, a boat in mid-construction continuously transforms into various spaces and landscapes, accompanying the emotional and territorial journey of its protagonists.
With over a decade of experience, Teatro Periplos has established itself as a company dedicated to creating productions that engage with memory, territory, and popular traditions, undertaking scenic research based on object theater, masks, and local narratives.
