Former Ambassador Hadad Submits Report to Chilean Ministry on Criminal Charges Against Israel Related to Humanitarian Mission
Original article: Exembajador Hadad entregó a Cancillería un informe con las imputaciones penales que hay que formularle a Israel y por las cuales «tiene que responder» Former Ambassador Nelson Hadad, a member of Lawyers for Palestine and legal representative of the Chilean delegation in the Global Sumud humanitarian mission, held a meeting with the Middle East Director of the Chilean Foreign Ministry, Ambassador Carlos Morán, and Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Patricio Torres, accompanied by relatives of the Chilean citizens kidnapped by Israeli forces while participating in the civil mission to Gaza. During the meeting, a report detailing serious violations committed against the Global Sumud Flotilla was presented, outlining the humanitarian, civil, and peaceful nature of the mission, alongside the illegality of its interception in international waters. The document expresses particular concern for the Chilean citizens Claudio Caiozzi, Víctor Chanfreau, Carolina Eltit, and Ignacio Ladrón de Guevara, whose whereabouts and health status have been unknown since Monday, May 18.
The alert is also based on a precedent from April 29, when Israeli forces intercepted other vessels from the same mission and forcibly relocated their crew, including Chilean Macarena Chahuán. According to the report delivered to the Ministry, during that operation “most participants were subjected to treatments that could amount to torture,” including beatings, deprivation of water and food, detention under inhuman conditions, and other physical and psychological abuses. According to information released by the legal group Adalah, which provides legal assistance to hundreds of participants illegally detained by Israel, most activists are reportedly being transferred to Ktziot prison and will appear before a court tomorrow awaiting deportation.
In response, the legal team denounced systematic violations of due process, alongside widespread physical and psychological abuse against participants of the humanitarian mission. Additionally, it has been reported that the Chilean consul in Israel, Jorge Torres, will visit the detained Chileans in prison tomorrow (Thursday, May 21) to directly assess their physical state, mental health, and conditions of confinement. Following the meeting with the Ministry, Nelson Hadad stated, “We submitted to the minister a set of criminal charges that must be filed against Israel, for which they must be held accountable, including the compensation for all damages suffered by the victims.
We are now waiting for a statement from the ministry regarding this incident. ” “The participants of Global Sumud traveled with a very noble purpose: to deliver food, water, and medicine to the children of Gaza who are currently suffering genocide and dying from starvation due to lack of food. This was a peaceful flotilla, unarmed.
Consequently, we have delivered a document outlining the crimes, aside from the physical violence exerted against the volunteers,” the former ambassador added. «Formal Diplomatic Protest» In the document submitted to the Ministry, Nelson Hadad requested the Chilean government to file a formal diplomatic protest for the illegal interception of the flotilla; demanding reparations and compliance with Israel’s international obligations regarding the treatment of detainees and the entry of humanitarian aid. In this regard, Chile was urged to demand that Israel guarantee permanent consular access and independent legal defense for Chilean citizens; work for the immediate and unconditional release of all kidnapped participants; document potential cases of torture, sexual violence, denial of medical care, and other reported abuses; and maintain regular communication with both the families of the detainees and their legal representatives.
We will continue to provide updates.
