Original article: Exposición aborda mapa del femicidio en Chile y visibiliza las resistencias cotidianas de las mujeres frente a la violencia de género Exhibition Highlights Femicide Mapping in Chile and Daily Resistance of Women Against Gender Violence «Hilvanar: To Stitch, To Tell, To Resist» is the title of the exhibition opening on Wednesday, April 15, at the University of Playa Ancha in Valparaíso. After four years of research, the exhibition presents stories, images, and audio recordings that capture shared experiences and meanings regarding violence against women. This initiative is the result of the Fondecyt Regular project «Gender Violence in (Ex) Partner Relationships: Intersectionality, Agencies, and Resistance,» led by Dr.

Macarena Trujillo Cristoffanini, a sociologist and academic at the University of Playa Ancha. The research analyzes experiences of gender-based violence in relationships, examining its connection to social inequalities and the forms of resistance women develop in their daily lives. One significant aspect of the exhibit is the mapping of femicide and memory in Chile, conducted as part of this research.

This map visualizes where femicides have occurred in Chile over the past five years. The study reveals that regardless of the type of femicide, most cases take place within the home, confirming that domestic spaces remain unsafe for women. Additionally, the exhibition explores women’s emotional experiences when navigating formal reporting channels.

«In this research, many women had reported incidents, but what they share with us is that the emotions they experience in those spaces tend to be quite negative. Very few report feelings of well-being, which typically arise from specific attentions or individuals treating them well. Generally, they feel a lot of discrimination and indifference,» states Dr.

Trujillo. For the academic, the research and the exhibition are crucial as gender-based violence continues to be a pressing problem and reality. «It is essential to connect what seem to be individual experiences to understand that gender violence is, in fact, a collective phenomenon.

Although awareness of this issue has grown over the last decade, violence persists, and its traumatic effects extend into the futures of many women. Understanding that this is not a private matter, but a social problem that affects us all, is extremely relevant,» emphasizes the academic. «Hilvanar: To Stitch, To Tell, To Resist» offers an artistic and participatory journey intertwining research with creative expression.

The exhibition not only showcases a femicide map but also includes photographs taken by women directly involved in the study, along with audio recordings where various women lend their voices to add new layers of meaning to the images and narratives. Moreover, the exhibition displays bodily maps that encapsulate memories of pain, as well as advice and supportive messages directed at other women experiencing similar situations. This collection of pieces articulates a collective testimony that transforms individual stories into a powerful narrative of resistance and shared agency.

The exhibition will be open from April 15 to May 15 at the University of Playa Ancha library in Valparaíso. It will be accessible Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 19:00. For more information, visit www.
